The adventure:
Revealing Rajasthan is a 22 day art adventure that starts in Delhi. After a day of gathering all our adventurers from different parts of the world, we meet for our first dinner together. Day 2 sees us set off in our bus for the Museum of Modern Art before replacing hectic Delhi with the rural Shekawati region where we can relax this evening in our hotel’s green garden listening to traditional music. On day 3 we visit local towns visiting haveli (merchants’ homes) to view traditional wall frescoes in preparation for the full day traditional painting workshop on Day 4.
After drawing along the dusty road to Bikaner on Day 5 we are guided through the intricacies of rich miniature painting including the mixing of natural paints on Day 6 before travelling onto magical Jaisalmer. A workshop focusing on lavishly carved sandstone architectural details on Day 7 and a painting class with local villagers designing symbols for their mud and straw huts on Day 8, is completed with a sunset camel ride and a night sleeping in the sand dunes of the Thar desert. Onto the blue city of Jodhpur on Day 9 followed naturally by a ‘blue’ painting class and a tour of the amazing and commanding Mehrangarh Fort on Day 10.
Out to the calm of a wooded valley on Day 11 and a chance to capture the rhythms and sparkle of the movements and dress of local dancers on paper in Ranakpur. We visit India’s biggest and most important Jain temple with its 1444 carved pillars before heading off to the stunning lakeside Udaipur on Day 12. A full day workshop with a contemporary artist is contrasted to one with a village artist on Days 13 and 14. The small town of Bundi is our next stop on Day 15 with a contemporary artist guiding us in a full day workshop on Day 16.
The pink city of Jaipur greets our arrival on Day 17 with a block printing workshop. The energy gained in a day of free time (shopping, visiting museums, palaces?) of Day 18 is put to good use in a full day of concentrating on art with a contemporary artist on Day 19. A restful drive to Chand Baori on day 20 prepares us for an intensive mixed-media class at this amazing step well and then onto Agra. Nothing can prepare you for the awe inspiring Taj Mahal at sunrise on Day 21. A farewell dinner that night gives us the enthusiasm to carry out the careful packing of all our great artworks in preparation for departure on Day 22.
We can assist with extra days before and after in Delhi or elsewhere in this great country.
