Education Did you know that millions of children in India will never get the opportunity of holding a pencil let alone gaining an education?
In 2008, I was privileged to assist young Indian boys in their education, by teaching English and art for a short period of time. These enthusiastic 8 – 12 year olds had just been saved from a life time of relentless labor and the organization involved is helping to change their lives. Through this experience my eyes, heart and mind were opened to a situation that is hard to fathom because of its distance to what I accept as the norm in my own country. The magnitude of the situation is beyond belief, and it is impossible to sit and wait for political pressure to address the situation on a large scale.
But we can help on a personal level!
PROJECT 1: If you would like to assist in the construction of a school in northern India, I can pass 100% of your donations onto the local community. This agricultural region of 50-60 thousand people, doesn’t have enough schools, so the children play, carry water or help with the farming. Without an education their lives will be limited in this area of high unemployment. Construction has begun slowly on a school for 60 students in grade 4-7. They are waiting for money for the roof before contemplating furniture, books and teachers. DONE!Art adventures India raised money to pay for the roof in 2009. THANK YOU to all who came to morning teas, bought raffle tickets and flowers.
PROJECT 2: Dreadful floods in the beautiful town of Leh, northern India, in 2010 resulted in many new orphans and lack on basic suplies and homes. DONE in a small way! Art adventures India was able to quickly raise some relief funds through a second-hand book sale. THANK YOU to all who donated and bought books!
PROJECT 3: We now wish to create an arts centre which will also provide basic education to children, women and others wishing to learn. We hope to include an international artist-in-residence program and to support local traditions. ON THE WAY! We have raised enough to get started, but more is required. THANK YOU to all who bought flowers over several years!
